Spring Shoes

Ballet flats, sandals, and flip flops are all one’s typical springtime shoe  essentials. However, as we approach spring this year, a new variety of modern shoes are becoming exceedingly popular. These fall perfectly in sync with the wave of vintage inspired pieces that have inundated the clothing racks. They are mature and elegant as opposed to the tacky of previous years. There are, of course, a variety of different shoes that fall under this category. Read on, to find out what kinds of springtime shoes you can keep a lookout for when out shopping for your fresh spring wardrobe.

Oxfords

Oxfords were originally men’s jazz shoes, from their introduction in the 20s until now. However, as discussed in our post Gender Trender, the borders between men and women’s fashion have been becoming far more fuzzy. Oxfords have extended an arm into new territory, attracting a younger female audience. The shoes come in a variety of shapes and sizes. All have the characteristic lace up in the front. However, from there the term “oxford” broadens to encompass a much larger spectrum of shoes. Materials vary from shoe to shoe : some leather some suede and some of exoctic animal skins (these can be seen in the latest Burberry Prosom show). Some have modern cutouts near the arch of the foot while many others have lace-inspired details near the toe, adding to the 20th century feel. Depending on the style, oxfords can give an outfit anything from a preppy topping to a daring twist. Also, for women who find the shoe to masculine, elegant versions are sold that look similar to ballet flats except for the laces. These keep the same vintage taste in mind but look much more dainty. Also, for more formal wear, oxford pumps are perfect. Even these can vary from store to store- some even have a small lace up boot perched atop the wobbly heel.

Loafers

Similar to Oxfords, Loafers are traditionally thought of a men’s casual shoe which have been around for decades upon decades. \However, as discussed in our History Repeats Itself post, past trends often come back with a new twist! This twist happens to be that loafers are now back and ini especially high demand for women! Women’s loafers became especially popular when Steve Madden first introduced them to their collection. The loafers came in a variety of patterns and with a multitude of accents. Cheetah print, nude, and black loafers have been increasingly popular, although brightly colored loafers are also making their mark this spring. Despite the variation of colors for the loafers, however, most popular forms of these vintage shoes come with a unanimous accent- studs. Duplicates of Steve Madden studded loafers have been selling out amongst a large portion of shoe stores. Studs add a unique touch to the shoes and at the same time add edginess and femininity. A more vintage accent that tends to attract an older audience is tassels, which , although less popular than studs, are definitely worth taking a look at. In general, all loafers are extremely classy and can be a quite a chameleon. From preppy to edgy to casual to dressy, a nice pair of loafers can be paired with nearly any outfit.  If one is wearing a simple tee and jeans, loafers can finish off the simple look. If venturing out to a party in a dress, loafers help to neutralize and in some cases dress up one’s outfit. Solid loafers tend to be more casual while studded and jeweled pairs are a touch dressier. Loafers are already flying off the shelves of departments stores  because of their uniqueness and simplicity.

Boat Shoes

Like loafers and oxfords, boat shoes are new to women’s wardrobes, and like loafer and oxfords, they are not some new invention. They have been around for years. When I think of someone in boat shoes, I image a young man sailing his expensive sail boat. Boat shoes have become a symbol of wealth, just like brands and tags. However, with this upswing in popularity, the shoes spilled over and flooded the women’s section of department stores. Now Sperry’s has been making glittering, cheetah print, colorful, sequined, and plaid versions of their shoes. Apart from print, the shoes made very few adaptations to accommodate women. The structure is, in fact, more or less the exact same as men’s shoes. As late spring and summer approach, the shoes will become exceedingly popular. They can give any outfit as nautical and preppy look.
